LATIN AMERICA UPDATE
Aura lives with her 7 children and her parents in a 3 room shack in Guatemala City's famed Zone 3 garbage dump. The front door opens into a room carpeted with junk salvaged from the dump. One room has a bed and a crib that she and her children share. Her parents share a bunk in the other room. Each day, Aura leaves her 2 month old baby with her youngest sons while she scours the dump for items that might take a price in the market.

MAKING 4˘ FEED A CHILD
Just before the holidays, I had the opportunity to lead a team to Peru where I was reminded again of the incredible impact poverty has on children and families. Peru is not unique in this regard. Most anywhere you go in this world, it seems, you will find large pockets of children suffering from the effects of hunger and poverty. |

LATIN AMERICA NEWS
One in every 4 people in Latin America survives on less than $2 per day!* That is clearly not enough money to live on, especially when you consider you may have spent that much on a cup of coffee today. It is these children that we strive to reach through our Latin America programs.

MENTORING THE MISSION
This is a common phrase we hear from ministry leaders after they complete CHF's Compassion Ministry Essentials Training. They don't seem to expect the in-depth, visionary training they receive when they first begin the process of joining CHF's Mercy Network. Though, once they have completed it, they are amazed at the growth and ministry-steering vision they achieve. |

IN THE VOLCANO'S SHADOW
Dear Friends,
If you have followed the news, you know that since 2004’s devastating tsunami, Indonesia has suffered disaster after disaster. Whether from mudslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, or tsunamis, scores of Indonesian families are regularly fleeing for their safety. Sadly, it is often the children who suffer the most.
In the shadow of Mount Kelud, an active volcano in the eastern part of Java, thousands of families live and work under the reality of impending disaster. In October, 30,000 (est.) residents were ordered to evacuate the region because of the threat of a massive eruption. The volcano spews ash into the air and many of the refugees suffer respiratory problems. Knowing that compassionate relief would be needed, CHF equipped a trusted ministry there that was preparing to respond.
They set up disaster response and basic health centers in the displacement areas to deal with emergency needs. CHF provided Baby Paks (Food Paks® filled with products for infants), funding for food, medicines and transportation into the areas. Hundreds of families were cared for and given help for their basic needs. A mother of a 6 month-old shared through a translator, “Thank you. My baby receives good medicine and amazing Baby Pak.”
In January, Java was hit again, this time by tremendous flooding and landslides. 60,000 (est.) residents were forced from their homes. In one village, many families surrounded the home of the regent (a local official) shouting and begging, “We are hungry!” One stalwart ministry leader told CHF, “Indonesia is like [a] ‘supermall of disasters’. However, we believe that God is at work in our country. In spite of all [the disasters], He opens [the] door for us to shine His light and love.”
The desperate needs of children in Indonesia continue to grow, and it can be overwhelming to consider what any one of us can do to help. But be encouraged. That 6 month-old baby and many more like her are receiving desperately needed assistance in their time of distress. The help you have provided and continue to provide is helping to share God’s heart of compassion and love to needy children in Indonesia and around the world.
Would you consider making a significant investment in the work of Children’s Hunger Fund this year? It costs $6,500* to ship a sea container full of aid to capable ministry partners like those in Indonesia. If you are able to make a gift of that size, we thank you for considering this opportunity. You may also choose to fund a portion of that cost. A donation of $1,000 provides emergency meals to 25,000 children internationally and $100 feeds 2,500. If you would like to make an even greater impact in the lives of needy children around the world, please let me know. I am honored to join with you in meeting the needs of hungry children.
Gratefully,
Dave Phillips
President
